A Story of Bear Wood Carving in Hokkaido (Japanese northern place).

AD1912, Duke Yoshichika Tokugawa who had a big farm in Yagumo-Town, Hokkaido.
During 11 years his Europe tour,found out wood carving "Bear""Paper-Knife""Tray" in Switzerland.
He always thought over "Winter life of peasants and their cash income" in Hokkaido.
He recommended that "You better to make like these during Winter which is very severe season and cannot go to any place". After this, wood carving had been supporting their side-income till 1940. This is the first prosperity.

Next. This wood carving made by Japanese peasants at beginning, they wanted to know "Their animal craft is correct or not, then, asked to Native Hokkaido people who knows very well for nature animals in Hokkaido.
Natives make this wood carving gradually and Bear Curving becomes Active Sean as "howling""angry" "biting salmon" and to any active performances.
And the Bear Carving wins good reputation not only tourists but also worldwide. This is second prosperity from approx.1955 till present.

Material:Taxus cuspidata(Japanese Yew), which has very beautiful and narrow annual rings and also easy to carve and glossy.

This Bear wood curving is expressed:
We can see, sometime, the brown bear turns to a golden bear under the Autumn sun light.
It is left wood color and added a little singed surface to nose, salmon and plate.
The star form on plate is HOKKAIDO-Land form.
It was curved in 1985, mentioned on the back of plate.
